When it comes to your Fort Howard child’s health, you might first think of their diet. While putting vitamins and minerals inside your child’s body is important, you also need to pay attention to what is going on on the outside. I’m talking about your child’s skin.

The skin is our body’s largest organ and when skin’s smoothness is disrupted, small cracks and openings can create an entryway for bacteria and germs.

Active Fort Howard kids don’t often think of the condition of their skin until it starts hurting. Playing outside in hot, cold, or dry weather can lead to small cracks around knuckles or nails. This painful condition is called dermatitis, or extreme dryness. Temperature extremes in Fort Howard make it harder to keep skin moist and healthy – dry, chapped and cracked skin is common in summer and winter.

Many kids lick their lips until they turn red or bleed. Reminding your child to drink plenty of water can prevent over-dryness.  Using a humidifier during the night in your child’s bedroom can also help.

Make sure you leave moisturizing lip balm in handy locations: by their bed, the front door and in the car so reapplying it becomes habit. Remind them to slick some over their cuticles as well, to prevent cracking.

Gibson Island dermatologists suggest a using a daily skin moisturizer that contains shea butter and aloe to draw moisture into the skin and keep it in place.

Encourage Gibson Island kids to use waterproof gloves when playing outside in the cold. Lightweight gloves with grips added to the palms are great for playing ball and riding bikes. In addition to protecting skin from dryness, they keep small hands from slipping. You can pick these up at California sporting good stores or Gibson Island big box stores.

Using a non-drying sanitizer is another way to prevent bacteria from entering through the skin. Look for brands that are alcohol-free to prevent excessive dryness.

Today’s topic is energy drinks. Many Gibson Island teens are under the false impression that energy drinks like Rock Star and Red Bull are similar to sports drinks such as Gatorade and Powerade.

Energy drinks are completely different from electrolyte replacement drinks and we need to help our children understand the health risks they pose. Energy drinks contain dangerous chemicals that can harm kid’s growing bodies, especially their teeth.

Energy drinks contain citric acid, fruit juices and extracts, sugar, and a dangerous chemical that gives them their bright color. They can damage tooth enamel with prolonged use.

It is important for us Gibson Island parents to model healthy behavior for our children. If your kids see you guzzle energy drinks, you may want to think about the example you are setting.
